Description
Ichikawa Ebizo IX (1909-1965), later Ichikawa Danjuro XI, was a leading kabuki actor of the early Showa period and one of Shunsen's recurring subjects. The role of Yoemon is a male character drawn from the sewamono (domestic drama) repertoire; depending on the specific play, the costume may be the simpler dress of a townsman or merchant rather than the elaborate samurai armor of jidaimono history pieces. Shunsen's portrait conventions place the actor in a tightly cropped bust against a plain background, drawing attention to the rendered makeup, hair, and costume textures. The collaborative shin-hanga process at Watanabe's workshop translated Shunsen's nihonga-inflected drawings into multi-block polychrome impressions, with bokashi gradations modeling the face and karazuri (blind embossing) sometimes used for textile patterns. The work participates in Shunsen's broader documentation of individual actors' interpretations of canonical roles, contributing to a visual archive of Taisho and Showa kabuki that supplements the photographic record of the period.
