Description
Teraoka Heiemon is Okaru's brother in Kanadehon Chūshingura, an ashigaru foot-soldier in the household of En'ya Hangan. In Act VII, the celebrated Ichiriki teahouse scene, Heiemon discovers his sister has learned the rōnin's secret plot and in a moment of terrible loyalty resolves to kill her so that the conspiracy will not be exposed. The role demands the muscular, plain-spoken physicality of a low-ranking samurai and ranks among the supporting tachiyaku parts of the play. Nakamura Baigyoku II was a leading actor of the Osaka stage, and Shunsen's Shin Nigao set, issued for Watanabe Shōzaburō in the second half of the 1920s, frequently revisited senior performers of recent generations alongside contemporary actors. Compositionally these prints favour a half-length okubi-e framing in the tradition of Sharaku, set against a flat or mica-dusted ground that throws the character into sharp relief. The blockcutting renders the actor's distinctive features with documentary precision, while bokashi gradation in the kimono and the calibrated overprinting of pattern blocks reflect the sustained technical standards of the Watanabe workshop.
