Description
Okaru is the wife of Hayano Kampei in Kanadehon Chūshingura, a young woman whose fate becomes entangled with the rōnin vendetta when she is sold into a Kyoto brothel to raise funds for the conspiracy. The role is an onnagata part, performed by a male actor specialising in female roles, and its iconography emphasises the contrast between Okaru's youthful femininity and her mounting tragedy. Nakamura Fukusuke IV was one of the most distinguished onnagata of the Meiji and Taishō stage. Within Shunsen's Shin Nigao series for Watanabe Shōzaburō, the portrait employs the close half-length okubi-e framing characteristic of the set, with attention to the white oshiroi makeup, the small painted lower lip, and the elaborate shimada coiffure appropriate to the role. A mica-dusted or burnished black ground — a deliberate echo of Tōshūsai Sharaku's 1794 actor portraits — places the figure in a heightened theatrical isolation, while the careful registration of overprinted kimono patterns and the [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) shading of the obi reflect the controlled [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) production of the Watanabe workshop.
