Description
Like her other untitled prints, this work by Ninomiya Miyuki was produced through the multi-block, water-based mokuhanga technique that distinguishes Japanese woodblock printing from Western traditions. Each color requires its own carved block, and the impressions must be pulled in sequence with the paper held in [kento](/glossary/kento) registration. Contemporary mokuhanga editions are typically small — often under fifty impressions — because the manual labor of printing each layer accumulates quickly, and pigment behavior shifts as humidity and brush condition change across a long edition. Ninomiya's body of recognized work places her among the practitioners who sustain this discipline as a living art form rather than a heritage craft. Her selection for two IMC juried exhibitions, separated by three years, indicates ongoing development rather than a one-time inclusion. The untitled framing leaves the formal and material qualities of the print itself as the work's primary content.
