Description
This print depicts an artist seated at a table covered with the supplies of mokuhanga practice — brushes, paint containers, a wooden surface in progress. The composition shows the working environment of the printmaker: the brushes for applying water-based pigment, the cups for mixing color with nori (rice paste), the carved block awaiting impression. Mokuhanga differs from Western relief printing in its reliance on water-based color and the [baren](/glossary/baren) rather than a mechanical press, and the studio setup visible here reflects those material requirements. Ninomiya Miyuki's selection for both the 2021 IMC in Nara and the 2024 IMC in Echizen indicates a sustained practice within the international mokuhanga community. The print situates the figure of the artist within the documented tradition while presenting the work as a contemporary scene rather than a historical reference, in keeping with the [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) model of self-documented printmaking.
