Description
This print depicts an artist applying pigment to a wooden surface with a brush, surrounded by paint cups and supplies in a studio setting. The image documents one stage of the mokuhanga process: the application of water-based pigment to a carved block before paper is laid down and burnished with a [baren](/glossary/baren). Unlike oil-based Western printmaking, mokuhanga pigments are mixed with rice paste (nori) and brushed directly onto the block — the brush varieties and mixing cups visible in the composition are core tools of the practice. Ninomiya Miyuki's inclusion in the Asia regional exhibition at the 2024 IMC in Echizen places her within the network of practitioners continuing this technique in contemporary form. The Craftspeople tag indicates the print belongs to a body of work in which Ninomiya turns the documentary attention of [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) or [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) back onto the makers and processes of the craft itself.
