Description
This untitled print is part of Ninomiya Miyuki's mokuhanga practice as documented through her International Mokuhanga Conference selections. Contemporary mokuhanga encompasses a range of approaches: some practitioners hew to traditional subject matter and palette, while others work in pure abstraction or hybridize the technique with digital imagery, photography, or installation. Without a title or documented imagery for this print, its position along that spectrum cannot be specified, but its acceptance into juried IMC exhibitions — both the 2021 conference in Nara and the 2024 conference in Echizen — indicates it met the curatorial standards of those exhibitions. The print would have been hand-pulled by the artist using water-based pigment, [washi](/glossary/washi) paper, and a [baren](/glossary/baren), following the technical conventions that separate mokuhanga from other forms of woodblock printing. Edition sizes in contemporary mokuhanga are typically small, often under fifty, reflecting the labor-intensive nature of hand printing.
