The Chinese embroiderer at her work—needle and frame, the elaborate silk textile gradually taking shape under skilled hands—was a subject that combined the visual richness of Chinese textile design with a scene of feminine labor. Chinese embroidery was among the most complex and time-consuming of the handicrafts that crossed into Japan, and the embroiderer working on a large panel offered Gekko a subject of concentrated, skilled attention analogous to his own printmaking craft.
