Horsemanship: Magaki Heikuro depicts a famous Edo-period equestrian performer or martial artist whose demonstrations of mounted skill at the Eko-in sumo wrestling arena and similar venues made him a popular subject for woodblock prints. The horseman's dynamic control—horse in full gallop, rider in perfectly balanced posture—gave Gekko a subject combining animal naturalism with human skill, the equestrian tradition in Japan carrying both martial and performative connotations.
