Description

The incense ceremony—kodo, the way of fragrance—was among the most refined of the traditional Japanese arts, requiring the ability to identify and categorize dozens of specific wood fragrances and to compose new combinations according to aesthetic principles as rigorous as those of the tea ceremony. Gekko's depiction of the incense ceremony would have shown participants in formal kimono, the incense burner and its utensils arranged with the precision that this rarefied practice demanded.
