Description
A kacho-e study of the nanten (Nandina domestica), this print presents the full shrub or a significant section of it rather than a single cut branch, giving a sense of the plant's branching structure and seasonal character. Nandina in winter, when the red berries are most vivid against the narrow leaflets, was a compositional subject that required careful color management — the carvers would have used fine keyblock lines to define the individual leaflets, while the printers applied saturated red across the berry clusters with precise registration. Gekko may incorporate a light snow dusting or a simple graded sky to place the plant in season. Unlike purely decorative treatments, this design appears to prioritize botanical description, situating it within the broader Meiji interest in natural history illustration. The oban-format print would have circulated alongside similar kacho-e studies as collectible individual sheets.
