Description
The 1895 print of Onoguchi Tokuji destroying the fortress gates at Jinzhou by placing gun cotton depicts one of the engineering feats that characterized modern siege warfare—a soldier advancing under fire to attach explosives to the fortified gates that blocked the army's advance. The scene combined technological modernity (gun cotton, explosive charges) with the traditional warrior courage of individual heroic action, the Meiji military portrayed as simultaneously modern and classically brave.
