Description

A close nature study of young bamboo shoots emerging from the ground, this print follows the takenoko subject established in Chinese and Japanese ink painting and adapted into woodblock form by artists working in the kacho-e tradition. Bamboo sprouts carry seasonal associations with early spring and, in literati painting circles that Gekko absorbed through self-study, with rectitude and resilience. Technically, the subject calls for a strong keyblock to render the layered sheaths of the shoot and bokashi gradation in the surrounding earth or shadow to suggest the moisture of new growth. Gekko's botanical prints generally avoid the flat decorative treatment of earlier ukiyo-e flower designs in favor of an observational, brush-derived line that reflects his grounding in painting traditions outside the print workshop. The sheet sits within the quieter stream of his oeuvre — landscape, plant, and bird studies — that provided a counterpoint to the figural and narrative work for which he was more widely known commercially.
