Description
A third variant in Usen's lady-on-cloud series, this woodblock print continues his investigation of celestial feminine subjects drawn from Japanese cosmological and folk traditions. The clouds in such compositions function as both setting and metaphor — connoting the realm of the dead, the dwelling of spirits, or the passage between worlds — a reading consistent with Usen's broader preoccupation with liminal and supernatural imagery. The figure's drapery and the treatment of her face likely distinguish this print from its companions in the series, as Usen varied these elements to create subtle emotional and narrative distinctions between otherwise closely related compositions. Printing from multiple key blocks with careful registration would have been required to achieve the layered atmospheric effects characteristic of this subject.
