$2,000–$15,000. Common subjects: $2,000–$4,000. Key value factors: As a living artist continuing the shin-hanga tradition, Binnie's prints are investment-quality. Limited editions and larger formats are most valued.
The sumo gyoji (referee or umpire) is one of the most visually distinctive figures in Japanese sport — his elaborate ceremonial costume dating from the Edo period, his ritual fan (gunbai) and formal movements making him as much a participant in the spectacle as the wrestlers themselves. This second version of Binnie's sumo umpire composition refines or varies the first, the specific elements of the gyoji's costume and stance providing the same formal subject for both prints while allowing for variation in color, state, or compositional detail.
