Description
Furneaux's submission to the International Mokuhanga Conference (IMC) 2024, held in Echizen — the historic centre of Japanese [washi](/glossary/washi) papermaking in Fukui Prefecture. Conference submissions of this kind are typically printed on locally produced [kozo](/glossary/kozo) or [gampi](/glossary/gampi) washi sourced from Echizen workshops, foregrounding the dialogue between paper, pigment, and [baren](/glossary/baren) impression that defines mokuhanga practice. Furneaux's mature work tends toward geometric abstraction rather than representational imagery, employing flat planes of colour, [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations, and the subtle tonal layering that water-based pigments allow on absorbent washi. His compositions often reference landscape and architectural form distilled to essential shapes, drawing on his Scottish background and his Tama Art University training under Japanese masters. As one of the leading European practitioners of mokuhanga, Furneaux's IMC contributions reflect his sustained engagement with the international printmaking community that has gathered around the conference since its founding in 2011, and his role in extending the tradition beyond Japan while remaining anchored in its material conventions.
