Current addresses the movement of water — likely a tropical river or tidal channel — as experienced at close range. Kiggell's prints frequently render water through directional carving and the layered application of pigment-laden washes, allowing the grain and resistance of the woodblock to structure the marks describing flow. Figures placed within or alongside the current establish a sense of scale and suggest the human relationship to these bodies of water in Southeast Asian landscapes. The translucency achievable through mokuhanga is particularly suited to depicting water, as successive transparent layers of pigment on washi can build depth without losing luminosity.
