

Autumn Festival captures the matsuri tradition that animates Japanese shrines each fall, when portable mikoshi shrines are carried through neighborhoods, lanterns are strung between buildings, and crowds gather beneath maples turning to crimson. Morimura's festival prints typically eschew the kinetic figure groupings of Edo-period [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) in favor of architectural settings — the shrine precinct itself dressed for the occasion, with rows of paper chochin lanterns, hung shimenawa, and offerings arranged on wooden stands. Expect a palette dominated by the warm reds, oranges, and ochres of koyo foliage, balanced against the dark structural lines of timber architecture and the pale pulp of unprinted [washi](/glossary/washi) where lanterns glow. [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation on the lanterns suggests their internal illumination, while densely patterned carving renders the layered maple canopy.
