Description
Fireworks represents an uncommon subject within Fujita's body of work, which is primarily devoted to forest and arboreal imagery. The print likely renders burst patterns against a dark ground, using the inherent precision of woodblock registration to control the radiating forms. Fireworks displays — hanabi — carry strong associations with summer festivals in Japan and have appeared periodically in woodblock printmaking since the Edo period, though Fujita's treatment would reflect a mid-to-late twentieth century sensibility rather than the Hiroshige tradition. The mokuhanga process, with its capacity for subtle gradation through [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) wiping, suits the depiction of luminous color against darkness. The print may have been produced as a seasonal limited edition or as a conceptual departure examining light and geometry outside his landscape series.
