Description
This print constructs the visual experience of a flat architectural surface animated by cast shadow — a form with no inherent color of its own, defined entirely by the light it interrupts. In mokuhanga on kozo washi, Kean can achieve the dry, grainy texture of an aged wall surface by printing with reduced moisture on a lightly sized sheet, while soft bokashi gradations suggest the feathered edges where shadow meets ambient light. The work participates in a broader tradition of Japanese printmakers attending closely to architectural surface and indirect light, though Kean's abstract treatment removes the spatial cues that would locate the wall in any particular setting.
