Description
This diptych isolates a fragment of a larger composition, focusing attention on the spare, seasonal geometry of a garden in winter. Working in multi-block mokuhanga with gold leaf on kozo washi, Kean exploits the luminous, slightly absorbent quality of the handmade paper to build subtle gradations characteristic of bokashi dampening. The gold leaf — applied after printing — introduces a reflective contrast to the muted, water-based pigments, evoking the way winter light catches frost or standing water in a bare garden. The title invokes Matsuo Bashō, whose haiku poetry is inseparable from a spare aesthetic of seasonal awareness, suggesting the composition pursues a similarly distilled visual language rather than descriptive representation.
