Multi-block registration allows Kean to layer distinct shadow shapes across a compressed, courtyard-scaled pictorial space. Gold leaf, applied selectively after the water-based printing is complete, introduces points of reflected light that interrupt the cool, muted palette typical of winter shadow — a formal tension between luminosity and absence. On kozo washi, which accepts both the pressed leaf and the surrounding printed pigment with equal stability, the two materials read as continuous surface. The courtyard as subject — enclosed, still, stripped of foliage — provides a spatial container well suited to the measured, sequential logic of mokuhanga, where each block impression must be committed to before the next layer can respond to it.
