Description
The Three Marys in procession — Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome making their way to the tomb on the morning of the resurrection — is among Watanabe's most quietly dignified subjects. The three women, carrying spices to anoint the body, are moving toward the empty tomb that will transform the meaning of their errand from funeral service to resurrection witness. Watanabe's katazome palette gives the three figures a collective presence — similar forms and colors repeated across the composition — that emphasizes their shared mission and the community of women who were the first witnesses to the risen Christ.
