Description
A 1971 version of the Three Wise Men — made nine years after the 1962 original — shows the development of Watanabe's approach to this frequently revisited subject. The katazome stencil technique allowed for significant variation between versions in color, pattern, and compositional arrangement, and a decade of practice would have enriched his handling of the Magi's procession. This version likely presents a more fully developed treatment of the wise men's exotic robes, their distinctive animals, and the star that guides them.
