Description

A 1962 visit of the Wise Men to the stable completes the Epiphany narrative in one of Watanabe's earliest compositions — the moment when the Magi arrive at the humble stable with their royal gifts and find the child whom the star has led them to across their long journey. The meeting of the exotic and the humble — Eastern court astronomers in the presence of a peasant family and a newborn in a manger — creates one of the Gospel's great images of unexpected encounter. Watanabe's katazome style gives both the wise men's splendor and the stable's simplicity equal visual dignity.
