Created in 1953, this [oban](/glossary/oban) print depicts a maihime, a dancing girl, caught in a moment of performance. Shimura Tatsumi renders the young dancer with particular tenderness, her small frame moving through choreographed steps with a combination of training and youthful spontaneity. The "dancing girl" subject allowed Shimura to explore movement, costume, and the transitional state between childhood and adulthood that the role traditionally embodied. The elaborately patterned performance kimono swirls around the figure, its fabric responding to the dance's momentum while the dancer's expression reveals the concentration required to transform rehearsed steps into living art.
