Description
A second printing or variant state of Shimura's Rouge subject, the toilette scene of a woman applying beni to her lips before a small mirror. Mokuhanga editions of this kind frequently exist in multiple states — the carver and printer might issue an early proof on heavier hosho washi, then a later production run with adjusted color blocks, often shifting the kimono ground or the depth of [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) in the background. Comparing impressions reveals the collaborative nature of the medium, in which designer, block-cutter, and [surishi](/glossary/surishi) each leave subtle traces. Shimura was active in the late [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) and post-shin-hanga period when small-edition [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) circulated through specialized publishers and dealer networks rather than the broad commercial channels of the earlier [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) trade. The Rouge motif sits firmly within the bijin-ga tradition's preoccupation with the unselfconscious gesture — the woman caught at the moment of self-attention, rendered with the restrained line and modulated flesh tones that distinguish Shimura's mature style from his earlier illustrational work.
