The fifth work in Nakazawa's Ancient Shadow series, this etching with metal leaf explores the interplay between archaic mark-making and reflective surface. Densely worked intaglio lines — likely built through multiple acid bites — create layered textures suggesting eroded stone or aged manuscript surfaces. Metal leaf, possibly oxidized or patinated, overlays portions of the plate-worked ground, producing passages where light catches against the matte depth of the etched field. Calligraphic elements, perhaps derived from archaic seal script or oracle bone forms, are absorbed into the abstract composition so that legibility dissolves into pure gesture. The shadow of the title implies something recovered from obscurity — half-visible forms beneath successive layers of time and material.
