The peony (botan) holds considerable symbolic weight in Japanese visual culture, associated with wealth, good fortune, and spring abundance, appearing frequently in lacquerwork, textiles, and woodblock prints. The unusual subject classification pairing peonies with mythology may indicate the inclusion of figures or symbolic elements alongside the floral subject, or may reflect the flower's mythological associations in Chinese and Japanese lore. In etching, peony petals present a technical challenge — achieving their layered fullness through aquatint and line without losing the lightness of the individual petal. Chine collé supports the tonal range required for this complex, multi-petaled subject.
