Description
June in Japan coincides with the rainy season, tsuyu, making moisture-laden atmospheres, overcast skies, and hydrangea blossoms among the conventionally associated imagery. A landscape titled June likely depicts rain, mist, or the diffused light characteristic of this season, with cool blue and grey pigments dominating the palette. Technically, rendering rain and atmospheric haze in woodblock requires fine line blocks for precipitation and layered translucent washes across sky and ground areas. Kacho-e conventions may appear if floral elements are included alongside landscape framing. The numeric format of the title, 6月, suggests this print may originate within a twelve-month calendar series — a format that provided printmakers a structured commercial context for issuing seasonal landscapes in limited, numbered editions on oban-format washi.
