Key value factors: Edition order (first Watanabe/Doi printing vs. posthumous reprints) is crucial. Snow scenes, night views, and bijin-ga typically command premiums. Publisher seals and artist signatures authenticate first editions.
An untitled woodblock print from Komori Soseki's oeuvre of nature studies. Soseki worked within the shin-hanga system at a time when kacho-e subjects, images of birds and flowers, were experiencing renewed popularity among both Japanese and international collectors. His prints tend toward a muted, earth-toned palette enlivened by selective use of brighter accents, whether the vermillion of a bird's beak or the orange of autumn persimmons. The woodblock medium's capacity for fine line work and soft gradation suited Soseki's observational style, allowing him to render feather textures, water surfaces, and foliage with a tactile precision that photographs of the era could not match.
