Description
"At Victoria B.C., Canada" records Kawakami's engagement with the Western world beyond the Japan he depicted through the lens of historical Nagasaki — a direct encounter with a Western city, the capital of British Columbia with its colonial-era architecture and harbor setting. Victoria's resemblance to certain aspects of Meiji-era Japan (both cities were shaped by Victorian-era Western culture arriving via the Pacific) gives Kawakami's rendering an unexpected familiarity, as if the historical encounters his Nagasaki prints depicted had led him here at last.
