Description
A small color woodblock print by Suzuki Shōnen, dated to around 1900–1910 and held by the Honolulu Museum of Art (the James Michener Japanese Print Collection). The composition depicts a single figure looking out from the interior of a Japanese room — a quiet, anecdotal subject of the kind that Kyoto print publishers issued in small editions for export and domestic markets in the late Meiji period. Shōnen's design relies on restricted color, an open composition, and the unmistakable confident brush of his painted line translated into printed form. The print belongs to a small but distinctive corpus of woodblock designs that Shōnen produced parallel to his main practice as a painter, and that anticipates the [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) revival of the 1910s and 1920s.
