Description
The Neva River city gave Ono a subject as rich in urban geometry and historic architecture as any he found in Tokyo or Western Europe. "Unga" means canal — and Leningrad's famous canal network, its bridges and embankments, its Baroque and Neoclassical facades, must have appealed strongly to an artist whose eye was trained on the infrastructure of cities. The print brings a Japanese modernist sensibility to Soviet urban grandeur, finding formal continuity across cultural difference.
