Description
Edition 6 of 20, printed in 1962 during Ono's European travels, this view of Cologne's famous twin-spired cathedral captures Gothic verticality in flat, modernist terms. The cathedral's soaring spires — the great stone needles that dominate the Rhineland skyline — become in Ono's hands a bold graphic statement about the relationship between height and mass. His European cathedral prints belong to a coherent series demonstrating how a sosaku-hanga sensibility could digest Western architectural tradition.
