Description
Machi — a Japanese town or district — rendered in 1960 with the same attentive eye Ono gave to specific Tokyo neighborhoods. His town compositions typically focus on the density and layering of the built environment: rooflines at different heights, the geometry of walls and windows, the occasional vertical punctuation of a power pole or sign. The print documents postwar Japan in the midst of its economic transformation, when traditional urban fabric and modern development existed in productive tension.
