Description

West Shinjuku in the morning — the western side of the station district before the towers that now define it, captured in the early light. Ono recorded Shinjuku during a period of dramatic transformation, when the former shantytown west of the station was being razed and rebuilt into what would become Tokyo's most dramatic skyline. His morning view carries the particular quality of early urban light: deep shadows, cool air, the city caught before commerce and crowds fill its spaces.
