Description
The Children tag and the dance subject suggest a young figure caught mid-movement, possibly performing one of the children's dances popular in Taisho-era school and festival culture. Yumeji's image of a dancing child would draw on his extensive output in shojo and dōyō (children's song) illustration, where movement is typically conveyed through the swing of sleeves and obi rather than dramatic foreshortening. The mokuhanga print would employ flat decorative color and crisp keyblock outline to define the patterned kimono, with the figure set against an open ground that emphasizes silhouette. Yumeji wrote and illustrated for children's publications throughout his career, and his images of girls dancing or playing form a distinct strand within his oeuvre — gentler than his melancholic adult bijin but carrying the same Art Nouveau-derived line. The subject reflects the wider Taisho cultural investment in childhood as an idealized emotional realm.
