Description
A summer woman — "夏の女" — is Yumeji's subject in this undated composition, the warm season giving the figure its distinctive character: a lighter, more open atmosphere than his winter or autumn bijin, the heat producing a kind of physical languor and emotional openness that suits the season. Summer in Yumeji's calendar is the time of festivals, of yukata and summer fans, of evenings on the veranda when the heat of the day finally releases — a season of outdoor feeling after the introspective months of winter and spring.
