Description
Courtyard depicts the enclosed forecourt of a traditional Japanese rural property, the swept earthen or gravel ground bounded by stone walls, timber outbuildings, and the eaves of a minka farmhouse. Such courtyards — niwa or doma adjacent spaces — were working areas where domestic and agricultural life intersected, and Tanaka Ryohei treated them with the same architectural rigor he brought to the houses themselves. The etching technique allows him to register every granular distinction of surface: the rough texture of fieldstone walls, the planed grain of weathered cedar boards, the tight thatch of an overhanging roof line, and the subtle gradations of shadow across the ground. Cross-hatching builds the deep darks under the eaves while delicate single lines describe individual roof tiles or woven matting. Within Tanaka's body of work, the courtyard subject sits at the heart of his project: a sustained visual record of the disappearing fabric of rural Japan, in which the spaces between buildings carry as much weight as the buildings themselves, and the absence of human figures intensifies the sense of patient observation.
