Description
A narrow rural lane is among Tanaka Ryohei's most recurrent motifs, and this etching almost certainly presents the vantage of a path threading between earthen walls, hedges, or the shoulder of a thatched minka, drawing the eye toward a bend or distant gate. The title evokes the literary tradition of Basho's Oku no Hosomichi, but Tanaka's interest is documentary rather than poetic — he records the textures of beaten dirt, weathered stone footings, and the slight camber of paths worn by generations of foot traffic. The medium permits an exacting differentiation of surfaces: hard-ground line for architectural edges, finer needle-work for tile seams and bamboo, and aquatint for the gradient of shadow under eaves. The composition typically leans on strong one-point recession, a formal device Tanaka used repeatedly to convert the prosaic country lane into a study of perspective and decay. The print belongs to the long sequence of village-passage subjects that defined his mature work from the 1970s onward.
