Description
Yard With trees depicts a domestic yard or garden within the precincts of a traditional Japanese folk house, framed by trees rising from or overhanging the stone-walled compound. Tanaka Ryohei's etchings of such enclosed yards take advantage of copperplate's tonal range to differentiate ground texture (raked earth or moss), the rougher texture of stone-stacked walls (ishigaki), and the foliage masses of evergreens and deciduous trees. Hard-ground line etching defines architectural edges and tree branches, while aquatint passages model broader tonal areas of wall and shadow. The subject extends Tanaka's documentary interest in the immediate environs of the rural minka — not simply the building but its garden, approach, and outbuildings. Such enclosed yards, often containing storage sheds, persimmon trees, and stone water basins, formed the daily working environment of rural Japanese households. By the late twentieth century, when Tanaka was working, many such yards were vanishing from the countryside, lending his etchings a quietly elegiac documentary quality without recourse to overt sentiment.
