Yamashiro, Kizu

Yamashiro and Kizu are areas in southern Kyoto Prefecture where the Kizugawa River flows through a landscape combining rice agriculture with the ruins and remains of ancient settlements — this region was home to early Buddhist temples and the short-lived Nagaoka capital. Tanaka's 1978 etching approaches this layered landscape through his characteristic architectural lens, finding in the region's vernacular structures the visible evidence of deep historical continuity.
