Description
Three Together 2 is the second work in a series examining three figures in collective arrangement, suggesting that Aoki returned to this grouping to explore a different configuration or emotional register. Wood engraving allows for the fine cross-hatching and line variation that distinguish individual figures within the triad while maintaining the unified black-and-white graphic surface Aoki is known for. The number three carries compositional stability—a triangular arrangement resists the bilateral symmetry of paired figures—and introduces the possibility of social asymmetry: two and one, or an interior and an exterior figure. The sequential numbering indicates Aoki's practice of working in series, revisiting compositional problems across multiple prints rather than treating each image as an isolated statement.
