A September 1974 lithograph, this Diary entry stands apart from most of Noda's series by using lithographic printing rather than woodblock or silkscreen. Lithography — drawing on stone or plate with greasy medium, then printing through chemical repulsion — produces a different tonal range than either woodcut or screenprint, with soft gradations and a drawn rather than carved quality. The early-September date marks the transition from summer to autumn in Japan. Noda was thirty-four, still in the first decade of the Diary project, and clearly willing to experiment with different print media to find the right technique for each observation. The lithographic Diary entries are uncommon in his body of work, making this piece a notable variation.
