$2,000–$20,000+. Common lithographs: $2,000–$5,000. Key value factors: As one of Japan's most celebrated modern artists who lived to 107, Shinoda's work has a large, devoted following. Original sumi paintings far exceed print prices.
Made in 1968, Breeze is a woodblock print on paper that captures movement through static means. Shinoda's calligraphic forms lean and lift across the composition, their angles suggesting the invisible force named in the title. The ink work is precise but not rigid, each printed stroke carrying the slight irregularities that come from hand-carved woodblocks. Where a painted brushstroke records the speed of the wrist, a woodblock print records the deliberation of the carving knife and the pressure of the press. Breeze holds both of these qualities, planned spontaneity made permanent in ink on paper.
