$2,000–$20,000+. Common lithographs: $2,000–$5,000. Key value factors: As one of Japan's most celebrated modern artists who lived to 107, Shinoda's work has a large, devoted following. Original sumi paintings far exceed print prices.
From a Distance positions the viewer at a remove, and the woodblock composition reinforces that spatial metaphor. The forms read as something seen from afar, reduced to essentials by the flattening effect of distance. Shinoda frequently worked at the boundary between legibility and abstraction, and this print pushes toward the abstract end. The title does the work of orientation, asking the viewer to imagine a vantage point from which these dark forms might resolve into something recognizable. Without that suggestion, the print stands on its own as a study in placement and weight.
