Torii Kiyonaga's Evening Rain at Shukaku, recorded by the Art Institute of Chicago and dated to about 1780, shows the celebrated actor Nakamura Nakazo I in the role of the bandit Ono Sadakuro, a character whose terrifying introduction in the night-rain scene of Kanadehon Chushingura became one of kabuki's signature moments. The print belongs to an untitled series of actor designs and pairs the role with a poetic title in the manner of the eight-views tradition, treating Nakazo's stage entrance as an 'evening rain' worthy of a landscape conceit. As the head of the Torii school, Kiyonaga inherited the workshop's long tradition of kabuki signboards and [yakusha-e](/glossary/yakusha-e), and his Sadakuro is a fine demonstration of how he updated that house style. The figure is taller and more solidly built than in earlier Torii prints, with the menace of the role conveyed by stance and silhouette rather than violent grimace. The wet umbrella and the rain-soaked road are integrated into the design without overwhelming the actor's presence, while costume details register the textiles for which Nakazo's portrayal was famous. Although Kiyonaga is best remembered for his Edo [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga), this print shows that his Torii school inheritance kept him close to the stage. The Art Institute of Chicago's record of the sheet documents how an artist whose name now stands for serene beauty also gave one of Edo theater's darkest figures a memorable single-sheet portrait.
