A Mountainous Landscape with a Stream

This surimono by Totoya Hokkei, dated around 1827, presents a mountainous landscape with a flowing stream. The composition reflects the artist's command of the small landscape format that the surimono medium uniquely required: rugged terrain compressed into a tight square sheet, yet expansive in its sense of distance and atmosphere. Hokkei renders the scene with the disciplined economy he absorbed from his teacher Katsushika Hokusai, founder of the Hokusai school, balancing the volumetric mass of the mountains against the quick movement of the stream that runs through them. The print belongs to the broader landscape tradition that Hokusai had so powerfully advanced in the mid-1820s with his "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji," but it adapts that pictorial vocabulary to the more intimate surimono format. As a leading pupil of Hokusai and a senior member of the Hokusai school, Totoya Hokkei specialized in surimono throughout his career. These privately commissioned deluxe prints combined striking imagery with kyoka comic verses on heavy paper enriched with metallic pigments and embossing, and they were used by kyoka poetry clubs to mark seasonal occasions and other events. By the late 1820s, Hokkei had built a substantial practice supplying landscape designs to clubs whose members appreciated both the pictorial mastery and the technical refinement that surimono required. The Art Institute of Chicago preserves this impression among its substantial holdings of nineteenth-century Japanese prints. The technical refinements visible here, the soft color gradations of the sky and mountains, the embossing that gives texture to rocks and clouds, and the metallic accents that catch the light, all reflect the heightened production standards characteristic of the surimono tradition.
