The Street of the Post Station (Umayachi) belongs to Eighteen Illustrations of the Ladder of Ancient Words (Kogentei juhachiban tsuzuki), a surimono series Totoya Hokkei designed in 1831 for a kyoka poetry circle whose members took inspiration from classical literary references. Within the series each sheet pairs an image with verses that nod toward older language and refined associations, mediated through the seemingly ordinary subject of post-station life along an Edo-period highway. Hokkei depicts the streetscape with the controlled draftsmanship characteristic of his Hokusai school training: figures arranged at carefully judged intervals, modest architectural recession, and small genre details that animate the scene without overwhelming the inscribed poems. Surimono were not public commodities; they were privately commissioned and produced in limited numbers using the highest grade pigments, metallic powders, and embossing techniques. The result was a luxury object whose aesthetic refinement matched the literary aspirations of the patrons who paid for it. Totoya Hokkei was among the foremost specialists in this format among the immediate students of Katsushika Hokusai, and his ability to balance image and inscription made him a sought-after collaborator for poetry clubs throughout the 1820s and 1830s. The impression of this sheet in the Art Institute of Chicago, accession entry 81471, preserves a fine example of the Eighteen Illustrations set and documents how Hokkei adapted everyday subjects of travel for the elevated discourse of a private kyoka club.
